President Donald Trump has reportedly indicated that the government might take an equity stake in artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic, similar to the stake held in Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC). In an interview with Time published on Thursday, Trump clarified that he is not considering nationalizing the AI labs but is open to the equity model used for Intel.

When asked about the Intel deal, Trump stated, “I might. Maybe I could do that. I have many deals like that — I do that.” He noted that the Intel deal generated “like $60 or $70 billion,” adding that he made the agreement for the United States. Trump also mentioned that he told Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang he would not allow the company to sell certain chips unless the U.S. received a cut.

Regarding the potential deals with OpenAI and Anthropic, Trump said he would not consider nationalizing the labs. The article notes that OpenAI has reportedly considered offering the government a 5% equity stake as part of broader efforts to deepen ties with the administration. Earlier this month, Trump moved to rebrand artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence” across the executive branch and announced plans to name an “AI Czar.”

The Intel stake of 9.9% is part of a broader pattern of government equity involvement in public companies. The administration also holds stakes in MP Materials Corp. (NYSE: MP), Lithium Americas Corp. (NYSE: LAC), Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE: TMQ), and a “golden share” in US Steel Corp.

Intel shares closed 0.19% lower on Thursday at $120 and were up 0.19% to $120.23 in extended trading.
