Smithfield Foods, Inc. (Nasdaq: SFD) provided an update to its third-quarter 2026 outlook on September 8, 2026, ahead of its participation in the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference. The company cited persistent compression in the fresh pork industry market spread and lower hog prices as the primary drivers for revising its financial expectations.
The company reported that two external market developments have moved beyond the assumptions embedded in its prior outlook. First, the USDA pork cutout has declined further since its August update, compressing the near-term Fresh Pork industry market spread. Second, market hog prices have declined, leading to a more conservative view of segment profitability.
Regarding its specific segment outlook for the third quarter, Smithfield now expects a Fresh Pork adjusted operating loss between $70 million and $90 million. Conversely, the Hog Production segment is expected to report adjusted operating profit between $25 million and $45 million, driven by lower hog prices.
Despite the headwinds in the fresh pork and hog production segments, the company reaffirmed its guidance for the Packaged Meats segment for fiscal 2026. Smithfield expects adjusted operating income in the Packaged Meats segment to remain between $1.075 billion and $1.150 billion. This range reflects continued branded volume share gains, expanded distribution, and disciplined execution in a cautious consumer environment.
On the total company level, Smithfield anticipates third-quarter adjusted operating income to fall between $115 million and $175 million. The company stated that it expects to provide updated full-year guidance for Fresh Pork, Hog Production, and total company adjusted operating profit when it reports its third-quarter results.
President and CEO Shane Smith noted that while the change in outlook is driven by external market dynamics, the company remains focused on executing its strategies and maintaining operational discipline. Smithfield will conduct a fireside chat at the Barclays Global Consumer Conference on Thursday, September 10, at noon Eastern Time.
