Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: PLTR) Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar addressed the current state of artificial intelligence during an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday. Sankar challenged what he described as extreme views within the AI research community, arguing that both doomsday predictions and unchecked optimism reflect a "social delusion."

Sankar stated that warnings from some researchers regarding humanity’s potential destruction are rooted in a theological perspective rather than purely empirical evidence. He contrasted these warnings with the views of researchers on the opposite end of the spectrum. According to Sankar, some AI researchers are so confident the technology will cure cancer that they have taken up smoking to signal their "all-in" bet on the technology's success.

The CTO characterized the widespread hype surrounding AI as "mass psychosis." He argued that this distraction prevents a focus on the technology's actual developments. Sankar outlined two primary obligations for the technology industry: proving AI can strengthen national prosperity and security, and engineering products with safety integrated from the beginning.

The comments come as part of a broader dispute over who should influence AI development. In September, Sankar criticized the Effective Altruism movement for its influence over AI safety debates, arguing that a small group should not determine the pace of technological progress.
