Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: PLTR) Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar challenged prevailing views on artificial intelligence during an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday. Sankar argued that the current discourse surrounding AI is dominated by two extremes that he characterized as reflecting "social delusion" and "mass psychosis."

Sankar suggested that warnings from some researchers predicting humanity's destruction through AI are driven by a theological perspective rather than empirical evidence. On the opposite side of the spectrum, he claimed that some researchers are so confident in the technology's ability to cure cancer that they have taken up smoking to signal their "all-in" bet on its success.

The CTO stated that the technology industry has two obligations: proving AI can strengthen national prosperity and security, while simultaneously engineering products with safety integrated from the beginning. He also criticized the Effective Altruism movement for its influence over AI safety debates, arguing that a small group should not determine the pace of technological progress.

The comments come amid broader discussions about the regulation and safety of AI, with other industry leaders, such as Microsoft President Brad Smith, also calling for urgent government intervention to ensure safety rules are in place.
