Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) CEO Elon Musk responded to comments made by Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) CEO Hock Tan regarding the sustainability of AI investments. The exchange centers on Tan's warning that speculative AI investing resembles gambling.
Tan addressed the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, stating that many investors lack understanding of what they are buying and have set unrealistic expectations. He characterized the current environment as a "casino gambling" scenario. To illustrate the potential inefficiency of current spending, Tan compared enterprise AI token consumption to a video arcade, noting that a person with $10 worth of tokens might finish them in 10 minutes without learning anything.
Musk responded to a post summarizing Tan's remarks on X, stating, "No crying in the casino." Tan’s warnings come as Broadcom reports significant growth in its AI semiconductor division. The company reported fiscal third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue of $16.7 billion, a 221% increase year over year. Tan expects this figure to reach $21.7 billion in the fourth quarter.
Despite the revenue surge, Tan identified capital availability as the next major constraint for the industry. He stated that financing could become a bigger obstacle than wafer shortages, memory shortages, or electricity. This concern aligns with broader industry discussions about the massive capital required for infrastructure buildout. Research from the Brookings Institution projects U.S. AI infrastructure spending to reach $10.3 trillion through 2032, averaging 3.63% of U.S. GDP annually.
