Shares of Moderna Inc. (NASDAQ: MRNA), Vaxcyte Inc. (NASDAQ: PCVX), and Novavax Inc. (NASDAQ: NVAX) moved during the after-hours session on Monday, following a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia and corporate developments.
Moderna shares rose 0.17% to $203.56 in the late trading session. During the regular session, the Massachusetts-based pharmaceutical company gained 6.95% to $203.21. The company announced that Juan Andres returned as chief operating officer effective Monday. Moderna stated it is preparing to launch intismeran autogene with Merck (NYSE: MRK) following positive Phase 3 results.
Conversely, Novavax shares slipped 0.88% to $12.45 in the after-hours session. During the regular session, the company gained 20.08% to reach $12.57. Vaxcyte shares fell 4.36% to $70.60 in the late trading session, having gained 30.70% during the regular session to reach $73.77.
The stock movement follows a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia. A 28-year-old anti-plague lab worker died after a reported exposure to the pathogen on September 25. The Trump administration is reportedly monitoring the situation. Nearly 200 contacts are under observation, and Irkutsk Gov. Igor Kobzev stated that those under monitoring had shown no symptoms and had tested negative.
Vaxcyte announced a capital raise of $1 billion, consisting of $500 million in common stock and pre-funded warrants, plus $500 million in convertible senior notes due 2032. The company stated that the proceeds will fund trials of VAX-31, its 31-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine candidate, along with manufacturing scale-up and U.S. launch preparation.
