Markel Group Inc. (NYSE: MKL) announced a significant leadership transition in a filing dated September 3, 2026. The company reported that Steven A. Markel, the current Chairman of the Board, provided notice that he will retire as Chairman and will not stand for re-election as a board member at the 2027 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.
Effective September 8, 2026, the Board appointed Thomas S. Gayner, the company’s current Chief Executive Officer, to the additional role of Chairman, succeeding Mr. Markel. Michael O’Reilly, a Board member and former Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer at Chubb, will continue to serve as the Lead Independent Director.
In addition to the Chairman transition, Markel promoted two executives to the role of Co-Presidents of Markel Group. Simon Wilson, currently Executive Vice President and CEO of Markel Insurance, and Andrew G. Crowley, currently Executive Vice President and President of Markel Ventures, were appointed Co-Presidents, effective September 8, 2026. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Crowley will serve as CEO of Markel Insurance and CEO of Markel Ventures, respectively.
The filing also disclosed compensation changes approved by the Compensation Committee effective September 8, 2026. Thomas S. Gayner’s base salary was increased from $1,100,000 to $1,210,000. Simon Wilson’s base salary was increased from £897,967 to £1,083,520, with the USD equivalent calculated using a conversion rate of 1 GBP to 1.3544 USD as of September 7, 2026. Andrew G. Crowley’s base salary was increased from $530,000 to $700,000.
Furthermore, the Board established a Leadership Council, consisting of the Chairman and CEO, the Lead Independent Director, and the Co-Presidents. The council is intended to facilitate regular coordination among independent Board leadership and senior management to enhance the review of the company’s strategy, performance, and capital allocation.
