Lightbridge Corporation (Nasdaq: LTBR) announced on August 31, 2026, that it has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Launch Pad program at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The filing details a two-pronged strategy designed to accelerate the commercial deployment of Lightbridge Fuel.
The company will utilize the DOE’s Special HALEU Extrusion Demonstration (SHED) facility to produce Lead Test Assemblies (LTAs). Unlike a commercial-scale facility, SHED is a pilot-scale operation authorized by the DOE rather than the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), allowing for a potentially faster and lower-cost timeline. Lightbridge’s Chairman and CEO, Seth Grae, stated that the company’s existing cash and financial resources are expected to be sufficient to fund the construction, operation, and decommissioning of SHED.
Separately, the company is proceeding with the Lightbridge Expandable Fuel Facility (LEFF) toward an NRC license for commercial-scale production. The company argues that the SHED facility will provide a refined design for LEFF, as the NRC will be able to inspect the LTAs produced at SHED, which will be substantially similar to the commercial fuel produced at LEFF.
Lightbridge outlined the benefits of its fuel for utilities, including the potential to increase reactor power output by up to 10% without changing steam generators, or up to 20% with high-capacity steam generators. The company also noted that it has launched a Nuclear Utility Fuel Advisory Board to ensure development aligns with utility needs, specifically targeting the delivery of Lead Test Assemblies by the mid-2030s and large-scale commercial use by 2040.
