JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon provided an outlook on the artificial intelligence sector during the 11th annual JPMorgan India Conference on Monday. Dimon stated that spending within the hyperscaler ecosystem could potentially reach $1 trillion by 2027.
According to Dimon, hyperscaler spending has more than doubled from approximately $300 billion in the previous year to about $700 billion in the current year. He characterized this growth as equivalent to a 1% annual increase to GDP, though he noted that such spending may add a "little bit" to inflation.
Dimon described AI as an "unbelievable technology" whose rapid growth appears set to continue. He suggested that while the technology could eventually have a deflationary impact, the immediate investment surge is significant. Regarding the return on investment for these expenditures, Dimon stated that such investments cannot always be measured through a straightforward ROI calculation, citing improvements in customer experience as a difficult-to-quantify benefit.
The CEO also cautioned that it is premature to identify the winners of the AI boom, drawing a comparison to the internet bubble. He noted that one cannot look at the ecosystem and declare all winners and losers at this stage.
Separate data from Apollo Global Management Chief Economist Torsten Slok indicates that six major hyperscalers—Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Microsoft Corp., Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META), Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL), and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX)—are collectively expected to spend roughly $916 billion over the next 12 months, with that figure rising to nearly $1.2 trillion the following year.
