Jefferies Financial Group Inc. held its 2026 Annual Investor Meeting on October 19, 2026. The event was led by Chief Executive Officer Rich Handler, who outlined the firm’s strategy for the future and highlighted the company’s current scale and capabilities.
Handler emphasized that Jefferies has reached a critical mass, describing its scale and scope as second only to a handful of the largest global banks. He noted that the firm’s human capital is on par with the best in the industry and that the client base includes sophisticated partners across all geographies and market segments.
Regarding shareholder returns, Handler stated that the company has been buying back shares at attractive prices. In the weeks leading up to the meeting, Jefferies purchased approximately 2.7 million shares, representing about 1% of the company. He noted that over the last ten months, the firm has returned about 11% of its tangible book value through dividends and buybacks, and over the last seven years, it has repurchased over $5 billion in stock.
President Brian Friedman provided a detailed review of the firm’s performance over the trailing 12 months. He reported that net revenue had increased by more than a third and net earnings had increased by nearly two-thirds compared to two years ago. Return on Tangible Equity (ROTE) had risen by over 300 basis points. Friedman noted that Jefferies had moved up to the fifth position in Mergers & Acquisitions and Equity Capital Markets, while the number of Managing Directors in investment banking had increased modestly from 364 to 376.
The presentation also addressed future business developments. The firm intends to monetize the remainder of its merchant bank portfolio and is targeting the first quarter of 2027 to close the Hildene asset management business. Once Hildene is closed, the company plans to redeploy that capital. Additionally, the firm highlighted the progress of its joint venture with SMBC, specifically the Japanese equities joint venture, which is scheduled to begin operations in early January.
