CNA Financial Corporation announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2026. The company reported net income of $196 million, or $0.72 per diluted share, compared to $403 million, or $1.48 per share, in the prior year quarter. Core income was reported at $203 million, or $0.75 per share, down from $409 million, or $1.50 per share, in the prior year.
Property & Casualty operations generated core income of $397 million for the quarter, a decrease of $59 million compared to the prior year. This decline was attributed to lower underlying underwriting results and higher catastrophe losses. The P&C segments delivered net written premium growth of 3%, driven by a 3% renewal premium change and a 2% written rate increase. The P&C combined ratio was 97.0%, including 2.8 points of catastrophe loss impact, compared to 92.8% in the prior year quarter. Catastrophe losses totaled $78 million pretax.
The Life & Group segment reported a core loss of $171 million for the third quarter of 2026, versus a $22 million core loss in the prior year quarter. This unfavorable result reflects an after-tax impact of $137 million from annual long-term care reserve assumption updates. However, the company noted that this unfavorable impact is almost entirely offset by a favorable economic impact from recent investment portfolio actions, the benefits of which are not immediately reflected in current period earnings under GAAP accounting.
CNA Financial declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.48 per share, payable on December 3, 2026, to stockholders of record on November 16, 2026. As of September 30, 2026, the company reported a book value per share of $37.80, with book value per share excluding accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) at $46.11, a 5% increase from year-end 2025 after adjusting for dividends paid.
