Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. announced on September 30, 2026, that it welcomes a new strategic framework agreement between the United States Government and the Republic of Korea. The agreement aims to support the deployment of Westinghouse nuclear technology within the United States.
Under the terms of the framework, the Republic of Korea has committed up to $120 billion in investment. This capital is designated to finance the construction of eight large nuclear reactors on federal sites in the U.S. The reactor portfolio includes six Westinghouse AP1000 reactors and two Korean APR1400 reactors, which incorporate Westinghouse technology.
The agreement outlines a defined pathway for the construction of these facilities. It stipulates that Westinghouse will receive an upfront payment, guaranteed scope of work on the reactors, and a contract to provide fuel-fabrication services. Additionally, the framework provides for a cornerstone equity investment of between 5% and 10% in Westinghouse by the Republic of Korea.
Brookfield noted that the framework builds upon a strategic partnership announced in October 2025 between the Department of Commerce, Westinghouse, and its shareholders, Brookfield and Cameco. This previous partnership focused on funding the deployment of at least $80 billion of Westinghouse nuclear reactors in the U.S. The new framework is separate from a Department of Energy strategic partnership announced in June 2026, which included a $17.5 billion conditional loan funding arrangement.
The company emphasized that the terms of the transaction are non-binding and are subject to final negotiations. The reactors are intended to support the buildout of power and compute infrastructure required to meet growing energy demand, including from artificial intelligence.
