Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has unveiled its first-ever foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at an event titled "Surprise and Shine." The device features a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external display, designed to avoid the issue of "two phones awkwardly stuck together." The phone is about the size of a passport and features a titanium frame with a polished finish.
The device starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model and is available with up to 2TB of storage. Preorders begin on Oct. 16, with the phone arriving in stores on Oct. 23. Apple will also offer trade-in deals for the device.
Key specifications include a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel on the inside, which offers 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 80% more than the iPhone 18 Pro. The outer display provides about 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area. The phone features a precision-machined titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, and an IP68 rating.
Apple redesigned iOS for the foldable form factor. The Home Screen dock is now vertical, and apps automatically scale between the displays. The device supports Apple Pencil on both screens and includes Touch ID in the side button. It can be unlocked with an Apple Watch.
The iPhone Duo offers up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. It includes Apple’s C2 cellular modem, which is up to 50% faster than the C1X and adds 5G mmWave support in the U.S. The device is eSIM-only worldwide.
Cameras on the device include a new Fusion main camera and a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide camera. The outer display houses a 12MP Center Stage camera, while the inner display gets a new FaceTime camera. The phone supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording and a new Smart Take feature.
Apple also introduced a Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand and a standard case with two separate sections.
