Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is reportedly developing a dedicated AI server that would utilize two or four planned M8 Ultra chips. According to a report from The Information on Wednesday, the iPhone maker is considering using Nvidia Corp.’s (NASDAQ: NVDA) NVLink Fusion technology to connect these processors. This potential collaboration would aim to integrate Apple’s custom silicon with Nvidia’s broader data-center systems.
The initiative is described as an extension of Apple’s in-house chip strategy beyond consumer devices. The company recently refreshed its Mac lineup with M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra chips, highlighting that the 2-nanometer M6 delivers up to four times faster AI performance. The server project reportedly began about a year ago and has backing from current CEO John Ternus.
The report indicates that Apple does not expect a launch before 2029. It also notes that the project could still be canceled or proceed without Nvidia technology. If the server is launched, it would mark Apple’s first dedicated server hardware since it discontinued the Xserve in 2011.
Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) is mentioned as a potential beneficiary as AI spending shifts from training models toward running large-scale inference workloads. BakerAvenue Wealth Management chief strategist King Lip stated that Nvidia has excelled in AI model training, but for large, repetitive inference workloads, Broadcom is Lip’s “top pick” for the next evolution in custom AI chips. Lip added that Broadcom does not need Nvidia to lose market share to expand, as both companies can benefit from different parts of growing AI infrastructure demand.
